The Radiation Exposure Compensation Act (RECA) was created to provide compensation to individuals who were exposed to radiation during above-ground nuclear testing in the 1940s and 1950s. The Act also provides compensation to uranium miners, millers, and others in the uranium industry at that time.
RECA was first passed by Congress in 1990 and has since been amended several times. The latest version of the Act, which was passed in 2000, expanded the categories of individuals who are eligible for compensation and increased the amount of money that is available for payments.

What types of illness befell Downwinders?
While any type of cancer can result from radiation exposure, certain types are found more often among Downwinders. These include thyroid cancer, leukemia, and lymphoma as well as other conditions, including goiters and cataracts.
What states were most affected by radiation?
Exposure affects 12 western states, including Nevada, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Utah, North and South Dakota, Colorado, Wyoming, Idaho, Oregon, and Washington.

Yes. All claims against the Radiation Exposure Compensation Act must be postmarked by July 11, 2022 in order to be eligible for payment.
