4 Tips For Reducing Your Spring Allergies

When spring arrives, you might be happy that the harsh, cold temperatures of winter are behind you, unless you suffer from spring allergies. This can, unfortunately, make the changing of the seasons a burden when grass, pollen, and other allergens cause you to cough, sneeze, and feel miserable. Here are some tips for reducing allergy symptoms so you can enjoy the season. 

Replace Your HVAC Filters

A good thing to do each time the season changes is to check your HVAC unit. You want to make sure it is clean, operating well, and that the filter is cleaned or changed. It is especially important to do between winter and spring since it was likely used quite often to get heat, which can cause debris and allergens to build up in the filter. This filter helps to keep these allergens from entering the air through your vents, but if it is clogged, it might not work as effectively. If you have a reusable filter, you will remove it and clean it thoroughly. On the other hand, disposable filters can just be thrown out and replaced. Also, make sure the rest of the unit is clean and free of dust, mould spores, dander, and debris. 

Take Allergy Medication

You should start taking your allergy medication before the symptoms begin. When spring starts, make a habit of taking antihistamines and decongestants to reduce your symptoms overall. Talk to an immunologist about the best types of allergy medications for you. You might need to try a few different ones until you discover which one works best for you. Antihistamines are often the first to go for since they help to reduce nose and eye itching and watering from spring allergies. If you need to take them before driving to work or participating in other activities, make sure you choose a non-drowsy formula. 

Clean Your Home Frequently

During the spring, you will need to clean your home more frequently than you do the rest of the year. This is because allergens enter your home and get kicked up, which can then affect you. You want to start by tackling dust in the home. Dust accumulates fairly quickly, which you will notice if you have problems with allergies. Having someone else clean your home is ideal so you don't feel ill while attempting to remove dust. You should use a moist towel when dusting wood furniture and electronics as to not kick up the dust and have it enter the air. You also want to wash all bedding, including pet bedding, regularly if you suffer from seasonal allergies.

Avoid Doing Yardwork Yourself

While you might have a passion for gardening, be careful about how much you do it during the spring. At the very least, avoid gardening and doing yard work on days when the pollen count is high. During these days, either have another family member or landscaper take care of pulling weeds, watering the lawn, and mowing the lawn.
