What Type Of Rehabilitation Therapy Is Commonly Offered In Nursing Homes?

Nursing homes offer an extensive variety of services to their residential patients. However, many nursing homes provide rehabilitation therapy to patients who need temporary care so they can safely reside in their own homes again. Often patients receive care in a hospital, are released to stay in a nursing home to receive therapy and then go home once they have recovered. These are some of the types of rehabilitation therapy that many nursing homes have to offer.

Physical Therapy

Physical therapy is provided to patients who have lost some or all of their ability to move freely as they should. This may be due to an injury or a disease that has affected their mobility. Physical therapy helps increase strength and improve gait for some patients. This is done through special exercises and other types of therapy, such as massage and heat and cold treatments.

Physical therapy is also given to those who must now be confined to a wheelchair or walker. The therapy helps teach patients how to become more mobile and get through their daily routines while using assistance equipment. Stroke patients often receive physical therapy to help them regain movement if they have become partially paralyzed.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational therapy is also offered by many nursing home facilities. This type of therapy helps patients regain the ability to complete daily living skills that may be affected by an illness or injury. This includes feeding themselves, dressing themselves, personal hygiene, grooming and even housekeeping.

Speech Pathology

Another service that is commonly provided by nursing homes is speech and language pathology. This type of therapy helps those patients who have lost the ability to speak clearly. Through the use of various technological and clinical process, it is possible for patients to once again be able to speak clearly, comprehend what is being said to them and hold normal conversations. Speech pathology also helps strengthen the throat so that eating and swallowing is improved for many patients.

Nursing homes offer rehabilitation therapy to patients of all ages. Some facilities require patients to reside in the nursing home during treatment so they can receive therapy several times a day. However, others allow patients to come into the facility a few times a week so they can reside in their own homes during this time.

Rehabilitation therapy not only helps the patient with the physical aspects of improving their health, but it also helps them gain confidence and feel a sense of support, hope and encouragement in their recovery.
